GATE Resources

By Joe Mead

What is GATE?

The GATE program is the educational program designed to address the learning styles of the students who have been identified as gifted and talented.  The goals of the GATE program:

• meet students' intellectual needs,• motivate students to reach their highest potential, • increase the application of critical thinking skills, • promote positive social-emotional skills.

Students in grades 4-8 at CECA have the opportunity to qualify for GATE by earning an advanced score on both the math and ELA portions of the state assessment or by taking and receiving a passing score on the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT), a nonverbal test of general ability commonly used to identify gifted children. The questions on the NNAT are composed of shapes and/or symbols, and require few instructions.

We give the NNAT once a year and all students in grades 4-8 are eligible to participate, unless they took the test the previous year.  If your student has already qualified or they received advanced scores on both portions of the state test, they are not required to take the test as they have already qualified. We will be giving the NNAT on the morning of Tuesday, September 19.  If you would like your 4-8th grade student to participate, please complete the survey below, print out the parent permission document, complete it, and return it to the CECA office Monday or Tuesday morning.  If you have any questions, please let me know.

Thank you,

Joe
